Best Vegan Creatine UK: A No-Nonsense Guide
Almost all the creatine sold in the UK is already vegan. Creatine monohydrate, the form with by far the most research behind it, is made by chemical synthesis in a factory rather than extracted from meat, so the plain answer to "is creatine vegan" is usually yes. The creatine is rarely the problem. What it is packed into can be. Gelatine capsule shells, gummy bases, glazing agents and the odd insect-derived colour are where animal ingredients actually turn up. This guide covers how creatine monohydrate is made, why plant-based eaters may have more to gain from it than anyone, and the five things worth checking on a UK label before you spend anything.
Is creatine vegan? The short answer
Yes, in the large majority of cases. Creatine monohydrate is produced industrially by reacting sarcosine, or a sarcosinate salt, with cyanamide. Both starting materials are synthetic and neither is animal derived. AlzChem, the German manufacturer behind the Creapure brand of creatine monohydrate used by a lot of UK supplement companies, states that no animal or plant raw materials go into it and that the compound is produced through a "purely chemical synthesis".
The confusion is understandable. Creatine does occur naturally in animal tissue, and red meat and fish are the main dietary sources, so people assume a creatine tub must be an extract of them. Commercially it is not. Extracting creatine from meat at scale would be more expensive and far less pure than making it from scratch.
Why vegans and vegetarians may have the most to gain
This is the part most product pages skip. An omnivorous diet containing meat and fish supplies roughly 1 g of creatine per day, on top of the 1 g to 2 g per day your body makes itself in the liver, kidney and pancreas from arginine, glycine and methionine. Plants contain negligible creatine, so a vegan diet supplies close to none of that dietary share.
That difference is measurable. A 2020 systematic review in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health reported that muscle total creatine in vegetarians runs roughly 10 to 15 per cent lower than in meat eaters, with plasma creatine lower by around half. A 2018 randomised trial in the British Journal of Nutrition followed 40 omnivorous women for six months and found that those who switched to a vegetarian diet without supplementing saw muscle total creatine fall by around 14.6 per cent within three months, and plasma creatine down about 46 per cent by six months.
Research on what happens when plant-based eaters supplement is also interesting. The same 2020 review reported that supplementation raised blood and muscle creatine in vegetarians more than in omnivores, sometimes past omnivore levels, and that studies in vegetarian participants reported increases in lean tissue mass, type II fibre area, muscular strength and endurance. An eight-week trial from 2003 that compared 18 vegetarians with 24 non-vegetarians during creatine plus resistance training is one of the studies underpinning that picture.
On the cognitive side, a 2003 crossover trial in Proceedings of the Royal Society B gave 45 young vegetarian adults 5 g a day for six weeks and reported improvements in working memory and on Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices. A 2011 study in the British Journal of Nutrition involving 121 young women, 70 of them vegetarian or vegan, reported better memory in the vegetarians but not the meat eaters.
Being honest about the other side of the ledger: a 2023 randomised controlled study in BMC Medicine with 123 participants, about half of them vegetarian, found no sign that vegetarian participants benefited more than omnivores on its cognitive measures, and a 2025 study in Physiological Reports raised muscle total creatine substantially in vegans and vegetarians over seven days yet saw no change in repeated sprint power, with baseline stores that looked more like omnivore levels than expected. So "lower stores mean a bigger response" is a reasonable hypothesis with decent support, not a promise.
For what a supplement is actually allowed to claim in the UK, the general-purpose authorised health claim for creatine under retained Regulation (EU) No 432/2012 is this: creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise. The condition of use is a daily intake of 3 g, for foods targeting adults performing high intensity exercise. A second authorised claim, covering resistance training and muscle strength, applies only to adults over the age of 55. Anything beyond that wording is discussion of research, not a product benefit.
Five things to check on a UK label
1. The format tells you most of what you need to know
Plain powder is almost always vegan, because there is nothing in the tub except creatine. Capsules, tablets, gummies and flavoured blends all add ingredients, and every added ingredient is a place for something animal derived to hide.
2. The capsule shell
This is the single most common catch. Standard capsules are gelatine, made from bovine or porcine collagen. Vegan capsules are HPMC, also written as hypromellose or "vegetable capsule", made from plant cellulose. If a creatine capsule product does not say which, assume gelatine and ask. There is a practical angle too: creatine is hygroscopic, and moisture exchange between a hygroscopic fill and a gelatine shell is a well-known formulation headache, which is one reason HPMC often makes sense as an engineering choice as well as a vegan one.
3. Flavourings, colours and coatings
Things worth scanning for on flavoured creatine, tablets and all-in-one products: carmine or E120, a red colour from cochineal insects; shellac, a resin from the lac insect used as a glazing agent; vitamin D3, which is usually derived from sheep wool lanolin unless the label specifies lichen; and whey or collagen in blended powders. Magnesium stearate can be plant or animal derived, so it is worth a question to the brand.
4. What a UK "vegan" label does and does not mean
There is no legal definition of "vegan" in UK food law. Government guidance is blunt that a vegan label does not guarantee a food is free from a particular allergen, because businesses do not have to follow strict processes to label something vegan. A vegan claim is an ingredient statement, not a safety claim.
The closest thing to independent verification is the Vegan Society's Vegan Trademark. Its standards require that no animal product, by-product or derivative was involved in the product or its ingredients, no animal testing at the company's initiative or on its behalf, and reasonable steps to minimise cross-contamination. Certification is renewed annually.
5. Dose, purity and third-party testing
3 g a day is the amount tied to the authorised claim, and 3 g to 5 g a day is the usual research range. Two other numbers matter: how much you actually get per serving, and whether it is genuinely there. Independent testing of creatine gummies has been unflattering. NOW Foods reported that six of the twelve gummy brands it analysed by HPLC failed to meet their label claim, with several of those also carrying notable amounts of creatinine, and SuppCo's 2025 testing of six gummies found only two matched their labels. Creatine can also degrade to creatinine over shelf life, which is a formulation and storage problem rather than a vegan one, but it is the reason to want batch testing.

If your only goal is creatine, unflavoured monohydrate powder is the sensible answer and it is very hard to beat on cost per gram. Powder also lets you control timing, which matters more to some people than others (see when to take creatine) and lets you skip a loading phase if you would rather build up slowly.

Are creatine HCl and creatine gummies vegan? Creatine HCl is also synthetically produced, so it is usually vegan-suitable, though monohydrate has far more research behind it. Gummies are frequently pectin-based rather than gelatine-based, which makes them vegan, but independent lab testing has repeatedly found gummies containing much less creatine than claimed. If you go that route, insist on third-party test results.
