Creatine and Menopause: What the Research Explores

Menopause is a natural transition, not an illness, but it does change the body's chemistry. Falling oestrogen shifts how you hold on to muscle, how your bones renew, and how steady your energy and focus feel from one day to the next. That is part of why creatine, one of the most studied supplements in the world, has drawn fresh interest from researchers looking at women in midlife.

Why researchers look at women specifically

For a long time, most creatine research was done in young men. That has been changing. A 2021 review by Smith-Ryan and colleagues in Nutrients set out why women may be a distinct case: they appear to carry lower baseline creatine stores than men, and those levels can shift with hormonal changes across life, including around menopause. The authors argue this makes women an important group to study in their own right, rather than an afterthought.

Muscle and strength

Here is the one thing about creatine that is firmly established and officially recognised: creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high-intensity exercise. Bone health

Bone is a big topic after menopause, because the drop in oestrogen speeds up the natural loss of bone density. Researchers have looked at whether creatine, combined with training, plays a role here. A 2015 trial by Chilibeck and colleagues in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise followed postmenopausal women through twelve months of resistance training. The group taking creatine alongside training reported better preserved bone mineral density at the hip than the group training alone. It is one study, and the field is still developing, but it shows why bone keeps coming up in this research.

The focus question, and citicoline

Many women describe a kind of brain fog around menopause: word-finding pauses, a wandering attention span. This is where the second half of the perco formula, citicoline, enters the research picture. Citicoline is a well-absorbed source of choline, a nutrient your body uses every day. It has no authorised health claims, so it is worth being precise: the interest here comes from studies, not from settled fact. A 2012 trial by McGlade and colleagues in Food and Nutrition Sciences gave healthy women aged 40 to 60 either citicoline or a placebo for 28 days, and reported improved attentional performance in the citicoline groups. Putting it together

So where does that leave you? The honest summary is that creatine has one solid, recognised benefit for physical performance, a growing body of research around muscle and bone in women, and that citicoline has early studies on attention that are interesting but not conclusive. A 2025 review by Smith-Ryan and colleagues in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition frames creatine in women's health as a promising but still-maturing area, spanning menstruation through to menopause. Promising is not the same as proven, and none of this treats menopause itself.
